Our mission is two fold: To educate patients and their families about Pectus Carinatum, known in layman’s terms as “pigeon chest”, and to provide Orthopedic Practitioners who treat these cases with the devices and support they need to confidently and professionally reach their treatment goals.

A non-prevalent disorder, Pectus Carinatum is a disturbing condition for those affected by it. Historically, the condition required surgical intervention to correct. Over recent decades, however, the standard of care has evolved to the point where orthotic bracing has replaced thoracic surgery to correct this deformity. These devices marked an improvement in treatment over thoracic surgery. However, the use of ratchet straps in these designs was both uncomfortable and caused compression of the ribs, among other problems. Clearly, the concept was preferable over surgery, but the design needed to evolve.

Through clinical trials and research, Carbon Based, LLC has designed orthoses with the patient in mind. Due to its carbon fiber construction, the P4CO is both flexible and comfortable to wear. The P4CO is not bulky and therefore less likely to be detectable under the wearer’s clothing. The materials comprising the brace will not irritate skin, or cause damage to clothing or bedding. Additionally, this brace has a simple Velcro closure, making it easy for the wearer to put on and remove themselves. Its design is modular, has few moving parts and can be serviced, when required, by the patient’s Orthotist.
